Apartment Joys

It has been forever in the making but I am so proud to say that on December 27th I will be finally moving in to my Manhattan Apartment! What a way to end and start a new year, huh? L-u-c-k-y and blessed is my life, nothing short of magical things keep happening. Mostly I'm stoked to decorate. I'm so stoked I've been designing this space in my sleep. Inspiration is what I live for.

I just love how warm and spontaneous it is
Vintage charm in a modern way
Pesonal favorite.
Charming
Well, this little roomate won't be added for a while....

Also this means I get to be reunited with my stuff. Simple I Am, and I love my suitcase but I'm begining to feel like there is no such thing as personal space or style anymore. Only a few more days until I'm reunited with the more complete half of my life. Oh, how I've missed...

What The World Needs Now

There is a desperate need in this world for something... Something as small as it is powerful; and as rich as it is free.

The classic 1965 song by Hal David and Burt Bacharach suggest it to be 'Love' (Sweet Love). Yet here we are nearly half a century away from this songs release and we still have not tapped into this unlimited resource. It is not that we don't know how, but rather we'd just not be bothered with putting someone else's needs above our own. In a time such as this, on a day like today, in a moment like right now what can you do to to fill this need for love in the world?

So today, on the anniversary of the Lennon's release of 'Imagine', I dare you to take this opportunity to consider someone else. It could be a simple minute of good thoughts, holding the door to a storefront, or dropping your change in the subway performers hat. Imagine, if we did this once a day every day. That's 365 people a year, who's life may have been changed if even in the smallest way.

Le Cinema Inspirée

Here's a look at some of this weeks most inspiring films from the circuits we love best.

THE SILVER SCREEN
50/50
Rating: Complete Genius

50/50 is a movie about a young adult named Adam (played by Joseph Gordon Levitt) who receives the devastating news that his back pains are the source of a very developed and very rare form of cancer. With a 50% chance to live, the movie chronicles his journey through the terrible disease. Among his support system are his girlfriend (played by Bryce Dallas Howard), his mother (Anjelica Huston), a barely competent student-psychiatrist (Anna Kendricks), and his life-long best friend Kyle(Seth Rogen). I got the opportunity to go to private screening earlier this week for the film before it's public release. In addition I also met the wonderful cast and writer of the film. Why was the writer there? Well because the story is loosely based off of his own battle with cancer. Seth Rogen, who just so happens to be the writer's best friend, is essentially playing himself in the film! Not only was the film a great watch, but it was such an emotional relief. Who knew cancer could be funny? CANCER IS FUNNY. The movie ran the entire gambit of emotions, but it was clear that above all else life is best lived with laughter and surrounded by those you love to laugh with. If you know someone with cancer or have been affected by this disease in any way, I guarantee you this film is a much needed voice of relief on such a sensitive subject. Once again proving to audiences that it is possible to create original scripts that are moving, inspired, and completely hilarious.

TELEVISION
Pan-Am
Rating: What Else is On?
Pan-Am is a new TV Series on ABC about the lives of several young Pan-Am Airline stewardesses (played by Christina Ricci, Margot Robbie, Kelli Garner, Karine Vanasse, and a whole host of others). A period drama set in the 60s, I can say that the costuming (much like its brother show Madmen on AMC) is very well done. While one can tell from all the marketing and publicity ads placed for the show that ABC was expecting it to be a big hit, the show is the equivalent to getting sushi at a sushi restaurant. It's totally expected. Hopefully the writers can come up with something good, and I mean really good, for these characters to do. Otherwise the show lacks the real television mojo to live up to its pre-viewed hype. The marketing team gets an A+, but the show itself might be too soon to grade fairly.

INDEPENDENT
The Cinematic Triumph of Will Turnip and Russell Sprout
Rating: The No-Budget Wonder
What do you do when you're down on your luck and out of money (because you used it all on your booze and smoking problem)? Make a movie of course! While Director Tyler Diamond and writer Robin Day are far from the characters they created, the film has some great moments of cinematic triumph. It's main characters Russell Sprout (played by Thomas Hunt) and Will Turnip (played by Alex Carmine) are quite a pair comically. You almost feel bad for them the entire time, which believe me works if you like that "Aw, Poor You" kind of comedy reminiscent of Will Ferrell films. The story line was at par, but the writing of the script had us laughing out loud. Both the director and Joe Brown made the most of their film and really created something that is quite beautiful to look at. For a low-budget project this film makes 25 minutes well worth the watch. The key to this film is open humor. If you're prone to wear your pastel cardigans all the way buttoned up, then maybe this film isn't for you. But for those of us who aren't offended so easily, catch these filmmakers now while their films are free. The best part? You can catch the entire triumph on YouTube.

Girl Gets Annoyed Because She Can't Sing
Rating:WHAT IN THE WORLD?!
Nothing I love more than a great cover of a great song. After coming across this video, I was completely blown away by how good this girl is....NOT! What makes this hilarious is the earnest attempt to really sing the song. I felt bad for laughing, but how can you not? Especially when she's singing one of the hardest songs of all time: I Will Always Love You by none other than Whitney Houston. All I have to say to you is this make sure your volume isn't up to high and "I will always love" this video. You just have to watch this one to judge for yourself.

#vintageshitmyauntsays

Life can lead you on the most wonderful journey. If you're willing to say "Yes" to life, then you might be surprised the magnificent places you end up. Recently I said Yes to living with my great great aunt (yes that is two greats as in my Grandfather's Mother's Sister) who I had never met. She has a beautiful historic brownstone in Brooklyn, New York. To help you, The house has a two car garage that's how old it is. Nobody has a garage in New York! Well, at 95 years old my Aunt is full of the most fantastic things and I have learned a great deal about living a very long and wonderful life.

Plus she has led me to rediscover my love for all things vintage. This woman had such style! Diamond broaches, fur coats, sequins and enough hats to send to the next royal wedding--You name it. Even vintage perfumes on every shelf. Today I found vintage Gucci from Paris. Sure it's all in complete disarray but living here has been a completely unexpected adventure.

Things I've learned:
1. I have the greatest genes.
2. I have a new mouse friend, I named her Delores.
3. Friends really can last a lifetime
4. Travel as much as you can and to everywhere you can imagine.
5. Dessert should be eaten every day (we both agree)
6. Wash everything before you use it.
7. Church, church, church.
8. Real style is timeless.
9. Wearing expensive perfume makes life more luxurious.
10. If you don't want to put on clothes, don't.

The Vintage Adventures of G.G. And Nikki

GG: (on the phone) hello?... Yes hello? I need to have the cylinder changed on a door and also to get keys made... Uh huh... $65.00!?! Just for that? You got to be kidding me. Oh c'mon. That's too expensive you guys charge to much! How about I call you back. (hangs up the phone) Pass me that phone book.
NIKKI: Sure what for?
GG: I'm going to call around until I get a cheaper price. They must think I'm a fool.

(after returning home from a long day filming)
NIKKI Hey auntie I'm back.
GG: Oh, hey! Whassup?

(Nikki is lying In her bedroom which is across the hall from the bathroom. GG walks down the hall to use the restroom.)
GG: You might want to pull your door shut. I've got to do some serious business in here.
(moments later GG emerges from the bathroom)
NIKKI: Take care of business?
GG: Uh huh.

GG: Now lets get acquainted. What do you do?
NIKKI: I'm an actor and a writer.
GG: Oh boy I never knew we had an actress in the family!

GG: So you like baseball to huh?
NIKKI: Yep. The Braves are my team.
GG: I Always listen to the Mets on the radio. I love the Mets, but I can't stand those damn Yankees. Too popular.
NIKKI: Oh were going to be best friends.

Girls, Stop it... You're Both Pretty!

If you've been following the news, I'm sure you've heard about the recent economic crisis and school girl bickering going on in American politics. So in this time of financial woe does it really make since to spend money on anything we don't need? I say of course not. But just because you're being financially savvy doesn't mean your style has to suffer too. You should always invest in good quality staple items that are going to transcend decades, fashion trends, and in the end your finances. "The key to a good investment is longevity. It has to work yesterday, today, and tomorrow." Stay tuned for a new financial feature on this blog: Imitation Creation. A 'look for less' segment teaching you how to duplicate great high end looks for way less.

Things you should always invest in:
-Tailoring
-Makeup
-Glasses/Sunglasses
-Properly fitting Intimates and Underwear
-A Quality Bag
-Basics (Tees and Tanks without graphics)
Things it's okay to invest in every couple of years:
-Replacement Items (things you've had before and have worn out)
-Jeans (or dress pants)
-Jackets
-Swimwear
-Exercise Gear

Before making an investment purchase ask:
-Is this a fad item that may leave trend in the near future?
-Do I have something like it in my wardrobe already?
-Will I ever find anything like it again? Is it one of a kind?
-Will it coordinate well with 70-85% of my existing wardrobe?
-If it's X amount of dollars would I use it X amount of times? (For example $189 pair of sunglasses should theoretically be worn 189 times at least)
-Is quality important, or can I find something similar for less?

If most of these questions answer accordingly, you might have a really great investment piece on your hand.

Manolos & The City

There's something about New York city that makes you feel like you're living The Life, without actually lving it. That's probably because of shows like Sex and the City completely idolize the lifestyle of the single professional female in the city. The moment you see those high rises it's like you can have all you've ever wanted and more. That beautiful dream is also a big fat LIE.

Nobody (including Samantha, Carrie, Charlotte, or Miranda) have it all. But thanks to SITC I have become fixed on having it all, without actually considering what I can actually get. Worse yet, I foget that all I really need I already have. So what do I want? A pair of Manolo Blahniks the quaint essential shoe of the SITC heroine Carrie Bradshaw.

These shoes represent life in the city as it can be: Fun, Fabulous, and Expensive. With this new pair of Manolos at my side I'll be walking into the future standing tall and one foot at a time, just like any other person. Only difference is I've already got it all.

Yours,

Single in the City

(PS. Shout out to the cutie in the suit sitting next to me at Starbucks right now.)

Frozen Yogurt and Lagerfeld

Last night I had a wild dream about... Well nothing. To spare you the abstract details I can't remember anyways, I will say that one of my favorite designers and human beings made a special appearance. Some friends and I ran into Karl Lagerfeld at a Mexican restaurant. Everyone else decided to split afterwards but me being me, I invited him out for Frozen Yogurt. On the way to the yogurt place, he imparts some really great words of wisdom to me:

"You'll be great no matter what you do." he said as he drove to get some swirly goodness.
"It will take some time, but just keep at it. You've got the right stuff."

The rest of the dream was a bizarre sequence of thought that involved a cheap retail store and a parking ticket left on the seat of my car for $200. BUT the point is this, we all have the right stuff. Every single person in the universe was given everything they need to fulfill their destiny. No matter where you want to go in life, know that you have within you the power to get there. Oh and that frozen yogurt is always a great idea. Preferably from my all-time favorite Pinkberry. I'm a big fan of original with fresh fruit and honey.

99 Problems but a Degree Ain't One

I iz oficially edumacated now!

With three years of academic rigger behind me I am done with that thing called college. Don't get me wrong I am totally appreciative to my alma mater for all their support but the real world is much more fascinating. That is to say I figured it out pretty quickly. College is a trial and error period. It's where you are supposed to make mistakes so that you get it all out of your system. But here's my thing; I don't make mistakes--at least not the kind college solicits. I believe everything happens for a reason. Good, bad, not so good, etc No matter what situations arise from our actions we are ultimately to keep living through them. I also know that no matter how many degrees I obtain or old I become I will always make mistakes, what matters most is that I remember to forgive myself every single time.

I've Got 99 Problems (but I won't list them).

So here I go. Into the concrete jungle and the industry that makes people sell their souls. Thanks for all The memories college its been interesting. But most importantly thanks to my friends for life, you all know I love you very much and though we are now apart I can't wait to see what this chapter in all of our lives bring. You are talented beyond measure and I expect nothing but great things, and even if you make mistakes know that I will always be here to pick you up, dust you off, and pat you on the butt and send you on your way. As for me, its time to live the life I have imagined in the only place I bElong. New York City. Oh, Don't fret I'll be blogging all the while.

FAQ: Who is Iconic?

By popular demand. I will now answer some of your most frequent and fun questions.

1. Who is your favorite designer brand?
YSL for sure. Then the list gets close with Moschino, Lanvin, Diane Von Furstenberg, Halston, Elie Tahari, ADAM etc...

2. Whats one thing you can't live without?
I'd say a pen and paper is pretty crucial considering all the traveling I do. You never know when inspiration visits you.

3. If your apartment burned down, what would be the first thing you save?
Myself.

4. What is your favorite color?
Yellow.

5. How do you create those awesome collages on I.I.?
An amazing site called Polyvore.com. I highly recommend you try it out if you like shopping and designing. Great for inspiration both practical and fantasy.

6. Is that a tattoo on your left arm? Do you have any tattoos?
Nope, but it is a birthmark shaped like The Tree of Life. Functions like a tattoo in that it is a permanent accessory.

7. How do you find inspiration? That's a good question. It's not necessarily a skill so much as it is a mindset. You just have to be open to things life and always ask the age old question "How does this make me feel?" I think inspiration lies somewhere in the answer, (be it for painting, photography, new ideas, or personal style).

8. Your closet must be amazing! Do you ever sell any of the clothes? It's got what i like. To me a closet is always a work in progress. I'm very very good about keeping things organized. Everything is color coded and season separated. This way I can see everything I have and rotate everything easily. I'm also really good about getting rid of items that I don't wear or aren't fitting my style anymore. Most of it goes to Goodwill or occasionally on eBay.

9. How would you describe your style?
I suppose I would be a Hippie with a PHD. I love vintage or vintage inspired items but I also really like classic clean things. I'll experiment with a wild pattern and a pair of mary janes any day!

10. You should post more often! Why don't you? Life gets busy, but I would love to do more post for you all. Consider it a New Years Resolution.

A Tiger In Her Hair

This girl is going to change the world. Mark my words. Her heart is as big as the possibilities for her future and her style is the most unique. Neima Abdulahi is a Somalian beaut who's passion for music will certainly carry her far. Did I mention she has a tiger in her hair?

Neima Abdulahi
Born in:
Mogadishu, Somalia

Raised in:
Atlanta, GA

Favorite Clothing Item
a 'Bill Cosby' sweater I found in a thrift store called Rag-o-rama. If you're ever in Atlanta, visit that shop.

Favorite Movie:
Back To The Future

Favorite Artist/band:
Choosing one is impossible! Here's the shortest list I could make... NAS, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Smokey Robinson, Lupe Fiasco, Allison Krauss, Van Morrison, Tupac, etc...

Favorite Candy:
Sour Patch

I Can't Live Without My...
Tangent thoughts. I love being able to trail away from one thought to another, because it sparked an old memory or a new idea. This is where all my creativity comes from.

If I Were a Color I would be:
Lime green

How would you describe your style?
My style is accidentally artsy. I never buy clothes with the intention to look cool or fit in. But for some strange reason, it always seems to work well together. *shrug* If it didn't work, I'd still rock it 'til it did.

Aspirations/Dreams/Goals:
Of course you'd laught if I told you that someday I'll be a bigger name than Bill Gates, The Beatles and Oprah Winfrey combined. [insert an arena of laughter here]. But that's not my goal. I want to be the best Neima Abdulahi I can be. That means waking up every morning with the will to do better than yesterday.

What's Inside Your Cookie Counts

Yesterday, after leaving lunch at an Asian restaruant with some dear friends I was given the coustomary fortune cookie. I have always had the fortune of pretty well advising fortune cookies and this one was no different. It said:
Of all the things that you wear, the most important fashion is your expression.

How many times have you seen someone that no matter what they're wearing has the worst expression or attitude? They could be dressed to the nines or styled to perfection but still find something to be pissed at the world about. I've always held that the best accessory is a smile--and maybe this is what that fortune cookie was trying to say.

One of my favorite TV shows is Ugly Betty. Although now off the air the show's protaganist Betty Suarez (played by America Ferrera) is by no means a conventional beauty. Her clothes never match, she's got braces, glasses, and a forrest of frizzy hair. But what she got that most of her glamourous fashion magazine co-workers don't? Inner beauty.

Productive Procrastination

There are times in life when it becomes extremely difficult to do that which we are supposed to do. For instance: Why go to class, when one can stay in bed? Why study, when you can stalk your twitter timeline? Unfortunately, this mentality can put us in a time crunch when it comes to getting things done. There are, after all 24 Hours in a day, and chances are you probably don't use all 24 productively.

So here's a little skill I am perfecting called Productive Procrastination. It's a means to put off our obligations/necessities in favor of something else that also needs to get done. It's sort of a self-automated-ultimatum if you will.

"I will either ____ or I will ____. "

You give yourself two choices, and two choices ONLY and commit to do either or. The trick is to make one the thing you don't want to do, and the other something equally as productive. This way you are fully maximizing your time. If you choose your alternate option, you have to at some point go back to the other option. Be sure to give yourself an ideal time to start what you actually have to do. This can be an exact hour on the clock or something less tangible. I usually go back when I am mentally prepared to do the less appealing option.

Examples:
  • I will either study, or clean my room/do laundry.
  • I will either work on this project, or organize my finances
  • I will either go to class, or go volunteer.
  • I will either do homework now, or go to class.
  • I will either study, or go to the gym
  • I will either do my hard homework, or do my easy homework.
  • I will either go to the gym, or run errands.
  • I will either do research, or I will research apartments/jobs/internships.

Things that don't count as effective procrastination tools:

  • Christmas/birthday gift shopping
  • Playing sports (sometimes)
  • Doodling
  • Get on Facebook/Twitter
  • Video games or TV
  • Planning your wedding/dream life

All this being said, I have class in 8 minutes.... Time to be productive!

Valentine's Day

It is Valentine's Day! The day in which we are supposed to tell those we love that we well... love them. Personally I believe we should tell (and show) our love more than just one day a year, but it is good to have a nice little reminder of how fortunate we are to have those people in our lives. Love is such a beautiful thing and contagious in all the best ways. If you are lucky enough to have love, you have something very precious--always treat it and that person with care. As a single this Valentine's day, I plan on filling the day with as much love for humanity as possible. You can never OD on love.

SINGLES CAN MINGLE.
Found yourself without a Valentine or that Special Someone on Valentine's Day? No big deal, there are many more days in the year and billions of other fish in the sea. Get together with a bunch of other singles and live it up. Do things that you all love to do like eat dessert, watch a movie, or play sports. Whatever you do don't do it alone. Why would you want to remind yourself that you're alone on the day where everyone seems to have somebody? The best thing to do is share your time and love with those who will do the same.
LAST MINUTE DATES
Sometimes you legitimately cannot come up with something wonderful enough to show that wonderful person just how wonderful they are. If you find yourself scratching for ideas today, here are a few pointers I can give you fellas:
  • DO NOT go to the cliches. Chances are if you are in this predicament, you were trying to avoid the stock Valentine's ideas anyway. What ever you do please don't go to the store and get the little stuffed animal with a box of chocolates. Creativity really goes the wrong way.
  • DO show her you know her. Pick a gift, activity, and or restaurant that you know she enjoys or will like. If your date likes Coldplay play the music in the car. If she's outdoorsy camp out for the night. She'll think you actually listen when she talks.
  • DO NOT go over board. Too much love is like your Mom on the first day of school. You want your date to feel special, not like the Queen of England. It should be about the quality of time you spend, not the quantity of what you spent.
  • DO something unusual for the two of you. No need to use a dirty mind here, just do something out of the ordinary. Do you typically go out on dates? Why not plan a night in. Always eat at the same restaurant? Go some place you’ve both never tried.
  • DO NOT try a big restaurant. At this point, it'll be really tough to find a big chain restaurant that has reservations available. Let's face it, everyone who has a stomach will be going out to dinner tonight. Last minute it will be best to find a small cozy and intimate place to eat OR you can stay in and make dinner.
  • DO be honest. If you really have nothing to do for the day, just say that. Better to be honest than to look foolish for trying. Apologize and come up with something by the weekend. You could even say "I couldn't come up with something as great as you are."

WHAT TO WEAR
Since this is a fashion blog I've got a few things to say on Valentine's Day Fashion. Personally I'm such a tomboy but I love Valentine's day because it gives me an excuse to be a girly-girl.

  • Be the best version of yourself. My motto is and always will be "Look Good, Feel good." On Valentine's day, why not look as good as you feel. (HINT: if you feel bad, try stepping it up in the looks department)
  • Romance your outfit. I love outfits that are flirty and just as romantic as the whole Valentine's day idea. Try lace, ruffles, pink, pearls, and pastels.
  • Look soft. I usually go for the whole studs and sneakers inspired looks but on such a romantic day I feel compelled to go softer. Easy on the eyeliner, harsh lipcolors, and severe hairstyles (ie Ponytails and Buns). Loosen it all up and just be soft and subtle.
  • I dare you not to wear a dress. It's so easy to wear a dress on Valentine's day, try a skirt or pants to be bold.
  • Dress for the date. There is nothing worse then wearing heels when you're walking down the beach or flip-flops when you're at a fancy restaurant. Feel free to ask the guy how you should dress to make sure you're appropriate.

MY FAVORITE LOVE SONGS

These songs may not be the most well known, but for what ever reason when I think of true, perfect, and beautiful love these are my absolute favorites. Feel free to love them as much as I do.

Back to School Cool

So its the first day of my last semester of college. So, in honor of this special occasion I am determined to kill it with my 'back to school outfit'. Let's face it you got to look your best when you're coming back into the classroom full of people you haven't seen since last break or summer vacation. Whether you're just going back to school today, or want to know how to work it in general in the academic world.

So here are my 10 Commandments for back to school wear (for some of you this is way late but cut me some slack people!):

  1. Thou Shalt Work It - Enough said

  2. Thou Shalt not Wear the Same thing as Someone Else - This is the cardinal sin of school fashion and fashion in general. If this happens to you, find a jacket or get creative and start cutting pantlegs off.

  3. Thou Shalt Pop a Tag - This just means wear something new. Wear two things new even. Just don't go too overboard with new stuff. You don't want to show all your cool new things as soon as you get them. Mix and match it with something old to ensure longevity of coolness.

  4. Thou Shalt Look Smart - You are going to school, look like it. If you look smart, you feel smart, and therefore are smart. It's a great way to fool the teachers too.

  5. Thou Shalt Be on Time - I know you want to look perfect, but make sure you are on time to class. It doesn't matter what you put on if you sweat to death running to get to class on time. To be safe pick out your outfit the night before and do not change it in the morning.

  6. Thou Shalt Smile - Always the best accessory even if you know there is lots of homework ahead. You haven't seen these people in a while, show them you missed them.

  7. Thou Shalt not get Dirty - Try your best not to get the apparel dirty. Particularly if it's new.

  8. Thou Shalt not Over do It - Less is always more, particularly when going to class. You are going to learn not walk in NYC Fashion week. No need to get avant garde just keep it classy (get my pun?)

  9. Thou Shalt use a Good Bag - For carrying those books, you have to have a bag that fits the look- most all of your looks. Pick a bookbag, briefcase, laptop bag or large tote you wouldn't mind putting on with 70-75% of your wardrobe.

  10. Back to School Hair - You may not have had the money for some new digs but a fresh hair cut can make a world of difference. My first day of high school I had the best outfit picked out but the humidity completely ruined my hair. Not cool.
